(Bandar Seri Begawan, 4th) The continuous growth and evolution of cybercrime threats have become a major issue. In response, the National Unified Network (UNN) is committed to continuously strengthening the framework to protect the nation and its data from cyber threats.
Chris Phan, Acting CEO of UNN, stated, "We build the infrastructure that connects people. The key is the trust in the connection and reliable infrastructure we provide, enabling SMEs and other tech companies to innovate more."
Further supporting the commitment to provide a trusted ecosystem, UNN has partnered with Big BWN Project (Big BWN), imagine, and Progresif to address the significant gap in digital literacy awareness among Brunei youths (aged 7-17).
In response, the digital literacy program Belia Pintar Siber has been curated as a collaborative effort aimed at educating primary and secondary school students nationwide on protecting themselves against cyberbullying and scams, enabling them to enhance digital resilience. The program aims to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Design and Technology, Arts, Engineering, and Mathematics) education at the Ministry of Education (MOE) through the Science, Technology, and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre.
Students learned about cybersecurity, misinformation, cyberbullying awareness, scam identification, and ethical digital behavior. These key topics align with the goals of the Belia Pintar Siber program, providing young people across the nation’s schools with the necessary digital skills to thrive in the evolving digital world.
Thus, the program also supports UNN's ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and propel Brunei toward becoming a smart nation.
Since its launch in October 2024, Belia Pintar Siber has been successfully implemented in seven schools nationwide: Sekolah Menengah (SM) Muda Hashim, SM Sayyidina Hasan, STPRI, SM Lambak Kiri, Sekolah Rendah (SR) Semabat, SR Selapon, and SR Lamunin. Accordingly, this initiative has benefited over 500 students from both urban and rural schools.
The remaining three schools: SR Bukit Udal, SR Rataie, and SM PJN, will also receive the digital literacy program after the Eid festival. However, the program does not stop there; Big BWN Project leader and founder, Nur Hafizah Al-Sai, emphasized that the participation, enthusiasm, and awareness sparked by this pilot phase highlight the urgent need to continue and expand the program beyond May 2025.
"By expanding this program, we can reach more schools, refine the curriculum to meet emerging digital challenges, and further enhance students' critical thinking skills, ability to navigate online spaces safely, and contribute positively to the digital world,"
UNN's Digital Resilience 101 posts on Instagram are part of UNN’s ongoing efforts to promote continuous awareness of digital resilience and literacy. UNN will partner with the Brunei Cyber Security Association to extend awareness efforts to UNISSA and continue collaborating with BruCERT and Brunei Cyber Security (CSB) to share corporate online safety tips via Instagram.
