Kanlaon Volcano in central Philippines erupted Thursday night, with an ash column reaching a height of 2,500 meters.
According to AFP, Kanlaon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines and has experienced several major eruptions in the past century.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology director Bacolcol said the explosive eruption began at 7:04 p.m. on the 26th and lasted two minutes, with the ash column reaching 2,500 meters. "Even more intense explosive eruptions may occur in the coming days."
He said this was the second moderate eruption this week, and noted that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology will continue to monitor the volcano 24 hours a day before deciding whether to raise the alert level from level 2 to 3. The highest alert is level 5.
