Pinduoduo’s ‘Free Shipping for a Single Item’ Targets Singapore, Intensifying E-Commerce Competition

Whether it’s scissors, toilet paper, electric toothbrushes, or ergonomic chairs, Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo has recently rolled out a “free shipping for a single item” campaign, lowering the threshold for free shipping for Singaporean consumers and heating up competition in the local e-commerce market.

According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, Pinduoduo, founded in 2015, rose rapidly by leveraging its low-price strategy and deep cultivation of China's lower-tier markets. In 2022, it launched the cross-border e-commerce platform Temu, accelerating its overseas expansion. As of August 5th, Pinduoduo topped the Singapore Apple App Store’s shopping app download rankings, with Temu right behind it, highlighting the widespread popularity of both platforms in Singapore.

Recently, Pinduoduo has stepped up its promotional efforts in the Singapore market, lowering the free shipping threshold from the original “free shipping for orders above 99 RMB” to “free shipping for a single item.” Reporter tests found that local consumers can pay using PayNow, credit cards, and debit cards, and the platform automatically arranges logistics. It takes about two weeks to deliver from China to the doorstep.

Tight Household Budgets, Consumers Actively Compare Prices

Assistant Professor Cai Yaohui from Nanyang Technological University’s economics department noted in an interview that under intensified inflationary pressures, local consumers are more value-conscious. “As household budgets tighten, consumers will be more proactive in comparing prices and willing to wait longer for delivery in exchange for lower prices.”

He believes Pinduoduo’s intensified campaigns will further drive local online shopping trends, especially for small-value purchases, as “free shipping for a single item” eliminates the need for consumers to combine orders to hit the free shipping minimum.

However, some interviewed experts believe that although Pinduoduo’s low-price advantage will attract some consumers, it is unlikely to trigger a major reshuffle in the local e-commerce market share in the short term.

According to data from consulting firm Momentum Works, Singapore’s e-commerce market reached a gross merchandise value of US$5.9 billion last year, a 21% year-on-year increase; Shopee accounted for 52%, Lazada 36%, and Amazon and TikTok Shop each at 6%.

Momentum Works CEO Li Jianggan believes that while Pinduoduo will indeed intensify local e-commerce market competition, the impact will mainly be felt among price-sensitive consumers. The local market will continue to segment in the future, with consumers choosing different platforms based on price, delivery speed, brand reliability, and the overall shopping experience.

Local Physical Retailers Expected to Face Pressure

Associate Professor Fu Fangjian from Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University pointed out that the intensifying competition in the local e-commerce market is, overall, beneficial to consumers, not only increasing product choices but also continuously improving service quality. However, this will inevitably further squeeze the space for physical retail.

Li Jianggan noted that local consumers are digitally savvy and more receptive to shopping from overseas; as long as products are attractive enough, they are willing to try new shopping channels.

“This will undoubtedly place greater pressure on local retailers. It is extremely challenging to compete on price alone against China’s massive manufacturing ecosystem.”
