Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Indonesia’s Flores Island Again

After a magnitude 7.7 strong earthquake occurred recently in the sea near Indonesia’s Flores Island, another magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck on the 17th.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, another earthquake occurred near Flores Island at 00:46 Greenwich Mean Time (8:46 AM Malaysian time) on the 17th. The depth of the epicenter was about 10 kilometers.

In the early hours of the 15th, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the sea near Flores Island, resulting in 53 deaths and 135 injuries so far. Currently, rescue workers are still searching for survivors.

East Nusa Tenggara Province has declared a 14-day province-wide disaster emergency response. At present, more than 5,000 people in the province have been evacuated to take shelter.

Disaster-affected areas are also gradually activating emergency responses. Among them, Manggarai Regency has implemented a 90-day disaster emergency response, Ngada Regency has implemented a 30-day disaster emergency response, and East Manggarai Regency has entered a disaster emergency response from August 15th, lasting until September 4th.
