Electric Vehicle Loses Control and Crashes into Electrical Box – Battery Flies Out to Road Center, Sparks Like 'Fireworks'

An alarming traffic accident occurred in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, on Tuesday. A seven-seater electric vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed into a roadside iron railing and an electrical box, causing the battery from the box to be hurled to the center of the road where it caught fire and burned. White smoke billowed out and sparks as well as flying fragments were emitted, making the scene look like 'fireworks,' frightening witnesses at the scene.

According to 'HK01,' the accident also resulted in an 86-year-old elderly woman being seriously injured and sent to the hospital, while the driver involved was arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving. The incident took place at 11:10 am; the MAXUS seven-seater electric vehicle was traveling along Kai Cheung Road towards Choi Hung, and when it was passing opposite the Auxiliary Police Headquarters, it allegedly suddenly lost control and violently crashed into the roadside railing and the electrical box on the rail.

The railing that was hit subsequently impacted a taxi and an 86-year-old woman surnamed Mak who was waiting to cross the street nearby.

Afterwards, the seven-seater vehicle continued moving forward before crashing into a railing again and finally coming to a stop. During the accident, a battery component suspected to be from the electrical box was sent flying to the center of the road and immediately caught fire.

Videos of the scene circulating online show that the battery lying on the road kept emitting large amounts of white smoke, with intermittent loud bangs, flames, and fragments shooting out, posing considerable danger.

The car owner filming the video was passing the scene at the time. The passengers in the car were startled and exclaimed: “It's on fire! Wow, it really exploded!” Afterwards, the battery continued to spray sparks and fragments, and another man described: “Wow, it looks just like fireworks!”

Soon after, the burning battery erupted with another loud "pop" and sparks shot out in all directions, scaring the car's passengers who cried out, “So scary!”

In the video, the person filming can be seen honking to alert traffic police in front of him to pay attention to the situation and prevent vehicles nearby from being affected. He then immediately turned into the right lane to get away from the burning battery.

The police later confirmed that the accident resulted in the 86-year-old woman sustaining multiple injuries and being in serious condition when sent to hospital; the 49-year-old male driver surnamed Zheng of the seven-seater was arrested on suspicion of 'dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm,' and the case is still under investigation.
