Heavy Rain in Hubei and Hunan: 4 Dead, 6 Missing

Some regions of China have recently experienced widespread rainfall. In Xuan'en County, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, a torrential downpour has so far resulted in 3 deaths and 4 missing persons; Shimen County, Hunan Province, has also seen heavy rainfall, causing 1 death and 2 missing persons so far.

From the 17th to the 18th, Baishuihe Village, Shadaogou Town, Xuan'en County, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei Province, saw heavy to torrential rain, with the highest rainfall reaching 292.6 millimeters. As of now, the disaster has caused 3 deaths and 4 people missing. The flooding led to a rapid rise in river levels, with multiple houses along the river in Baishuihe Village inundated, some houses collapsing, and roads and communications interrupted. After the flood occurred, relevant departments promptly launched emergency responses and urgently relocated 287 residents.

Since the morning of the 17th, Shimen County, Hunan Province, has experienced extremely heavy rainfall, with precipitation breaking historical records. As of 7 p.m. on the 18th, the severe rainfall disaster had caused 1 death and 2 missing persons. Relevant departments urgently evacuated and relocated 18,406 people.

Reports quoted the China Meteorological Administration as saying that from 8 p.m. on the 18th to 8 p.m. on the 19th, some areas in seven provinces/regions—including Shandong, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong—will experience torrential rain.

Zhang Tao, Chief Forecaster at the China Meteorological Administration, said that from the 18th to the 19th, some regions in Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, and Hunan face medium to high risk for rainstorm disaster, and attention should be paid to its impacts on agricultural production, transportation, and urban operations.

According to China Weather Network, rainfall in Hunan will continue from the 19th to the 22nd, with torrential rain forecast for the 19th and some areas expecting extremely heavy rainfall. Continuous and localized heavy rainfall may trigger secondary disasters, which need to be prevented.
