Estonian Airspace Incident: China Urges Parties to Remain Calm and Restrained

Estonia has accused Russian fighter jets of violating its airspace, prompting the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency meeting on the matter. On Monday (September 22), Geng Shuang, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, called on the parties involved to maintain calm and restraint to prevent the situation from escalating, emphasizing that the urgent and fundamental solution lies in achieving a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis as soon as possible.
According to Xinhua News Agency, during the Security Council’s deliberations on the incident in which Estonia alleged Russian military aircraft violated its airspace, Geng Shuang stated that the Estonian airspace incident, as well as the Polish airspace incident discussed by the Council a few days earlier, are both spillover effects of the Ukraine crisis. These incidents reflect a lack of mutual trust and increasing suspicions among the relevant parties, and are illustrative of the current complex and sensitive security situation in Europe.
Geng Shuang emphasized that until the Ukraine crisis is resolved and the war ceases, similar incidents are likely to recur. Therefore, the urgent and fundamental course of action is to achieve a political solution to the Ukraine crisis as soon as possible and to build a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security architecture.
Geng Shuang stated that regarding the Estonian airspace incident, China urges the parties concerned to remain calm and restrained, to clarify facts and eliminate doubts through dialogue and communication in order to avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments and prevent the situation from escalating. China has always advocated that all countries handle international relations in accordance with the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter.
Last week, the Estonian government said that three Russian military aircraft simultaneously entered Estonian airspace on September 19 without permission, remaining for a total of 12 minutes—a move described as provocative.
Estonia has lodged a formal protest with Russia’s highest diplomatic representative in Tallinn and called for a UN Security Council meeting regarding the incident. The Security Council held an emergency public session on Monday.
