The United Nations Climate Summit opened on the 10th in Belém, a city in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, with Brazil calling on countries to focus on fulfilling past commitments.
The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is being held in Belém from November 10th to 21st.
Thirty-three years ago, Brazil hosted the "Rio Earth Summit," at which participating countries signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This year, Brazil hopes to return the summit to its original vision, focusing on the world’s most vulnerable groups such as indigenous peoples, with some indigenous representatives also participating in the talks.
Brazil is urging countries to focus on fulfilling previous commitments, such as the COP28 pledge to gradually phase out the use of fossil fuels, instead of proposing new commitments.
