Russia Warns: If Russia-US New START Treaty Is Not Extended, World Will Face Dangerous Situation

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told the media on the 3rd that if the restrictions stipulated by the Russia-US New START Treaty cannot be continued, the world may fall into a more dangerous situation within days.

Peskov said that President Putin's proposal to extend the Russia-US New START Treaty remains valid, but the Russian side has not yet received a response from the US.

The Russia-US New START Treaty is valid until February 5 this year, and after the expiry of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty in 2019, it is the only arms control treaty between the two countries. In September 2025, Putin stated that if the US does not take actions to undermine the current balance, Russia will continue to abide by the core limitations of the treaty for one year after its expiration.

US President Trump said in January this year that he was not worried about the upcoming expiry of the New START Treaty and stated that both sides would reach a new agreement.

The Russia-US New START Treaty was signed in 2010 to limit the number of deployed nuclear warheads and delivery vehicles by both countries. The treaty officially came into force on February 5, 2011, and was originally set to be valid for 10 years. After consultations, it was later extended until February 5, 2026.
