(Sibu, 11th) The proposal for the establishment of a Faculty of Medicine at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has entered a critical stage, with the interim report of its feasibility study completed and expected to be submitted to the Sarawak government for review next month.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Anuar Rapaee, stated that he has received a preliminary progress report on the feasibility study for the proposed UTS Faculty of Medicine.
He posted on Facebook yesterday (June 10):
“This morning, I listened to a briefing by the research team on the interim report of the plan to set up a Faculty of Medicine at UTS.”
“This study and the related recommendations were completed over the past six months.”
Anuar said that the aim of this study is to assess the suitability, necessity, and development potential of establishing a medical faculty, in order to further promote the development of medical education in Sarawak and strengthen talent cultivation in the healthcare sector.
He said the research team comprises experts from both academia and the medical profession, with diverse professional backgrounds. Among them are UTS Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shahril, Prof Dr Lela Suut, Prof Dr Awi Idi, Prof Dr Kamarudin Kana, Dr Alan Fong, Dr John Tang, Associate Professor and Surveyor Dr Kan Fock Kui, Dr Sim Siew Ling, and Dr Zalikha Raman.
According to the plan, the complete study report is expected to be submitted to the Sarawak government next month for further study and a decision on whether or not to establish the Faculty of Medicine at UTS.
