Denied Entry into Singapore Despite Holding Visa, Nathan Law: Politically Motivated

Nathan Law, former chairman of Hong Kong's Demosisto wanted by the Hong Kong government, recently traveled from San Francisco to Singapore to attend an event, but was detained at immigration and deported back to San Francisco on the 28th.

According to British media reports, Nathan Law was granted refugee status in the UK in April 2021 and now holds a UK Refugee Travel Document. He was issued a Singapore visa three weeks ago and originally planned to join a closed-door, invitation-only event in Singapore.

Law departed on the 26th and arrived in Singapore on the 27th, where he was detained at immigration.

According to Law, after being detained at the border for four hours, immigration officers informed him that his entry was refused, but “no reason was provided.” He was then transferred to a deportation holding room and remained there for several hours before returning to San Francisco on the morning of the 28th.

Law believes the decision to deny him entry was “politically motivated,” but is “not certain” whether there was any “direct or indirect involvement from external forces such as China.”

Law has lived in exile abroad since the implementation of Hong Kong's National Security Law in 2020. He is wanted by Hong Kong police on charges of “inciting secession” and “colluding with foreign or external forces to endanger national security,” with an offered bounty of HK$1 million.
