Continuous Rain Causes Disasters: '30-Meter Ground Crack' on Guangxi Expressway

This year's 21st typhoon, 'Matmo,' made its second landfall in Guangxi Province, China, on the 6th, with Category 14 winds severely impacting the area. Not only were buildings damaged, but a large number of roadside trees toppled, and many places experienced water and power outages. On the Guangxi G80 Guangzhou-Kunming Expressway, due to the typhoon and continuous heavy rains, road surface cracking occurred on the 7th. Fortunately, there have been no casualties so far. A crack about 30 meters long stretches across most of the road, with the concrete surface exposing the yellow-brown, loose sand below—an astonishing sight.

According to a report by China National Radio (CNR) on the 8th, the Guangxi region has experienced continuous heavy rain due to Typhoon Matmo. On the evening of the 7th, around 7:30 PM, a section of the G80 Guangzhou-Kunming Expressway between Baise and Yangxu saw road cracks and subsidence. In the images released, two wide expressways can be seen, with the lane near the river largely fractured and exposing the brown sand underneath. If there had been vehicles passing through at the time of the incident, the consequences would have been unimaginable.

The report also states that, after confirmation by maintenance technicians, the slope retaining wall at the site had shifted, resulting in a crack about 30 meters long on the road surface, with obvious subsidence appearing—posing a danger to driving safety. The situation was immediately reported up the chain of command. The Baise Expressway Operation Company quickly initiated an emergency response plan, closed the road, and diverted traffic, thereby preventing any traffic safety accidents.

According to preliminary analysis by authorities, the incident occurred at a riverside section. Due to continuous recent rainfall, river water levels have surged, and the area near the expressway's slope retaining wall was soaked and the soil became loose, leading to the sliding of the retaining wall—and creating an imminent risk of collapse.

On the night of the incident, police closed the G80 Guangzhou-Kunming Expressway in the direction from Baise to Yangxu, and the G69 Yinchuan-Baise Expressway from Yongle to Yangxu, guiding vehicles to take alternative routes, and also assisted all vehicles stranded within closed sections to leave safely. Since the crack is up to 2 meters deep at its greatest depth, to avoid further incidents, the Baise Expressway Operation Company organized experts to study treatment plans and pushed forward with rescue and repair work in full force to ensure the safety of the public's travel.
