Positive Signals in US-Iran Talks Lead to Sharp Drop in International Oil Prices

(USA, 25th) Due to some positive signals emerging from the negotiation process between the United States and Iran, international oil prices dropped significantly on Sunday night (May 24th) in New York as the new week of trading began, with the decline exceeding 5% at one point.

According to Xinhua News Agency, data showed that the price of July delivery light crude oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange once fell by $5.24 to $91.36 per barrel (approximately RM361), a decline of 5.42%; the price of July delivery London Brent crude oil futures once dropped by $5.42 to $98.12 per barrel, a decline of 5.23%.

An American senior official told the media on the 24th that, in principle, the US and Iran have agreed on a deal that could potentially end the conflict in the Middle East, but final approval by the two countries' leaders may take a few days.

This unnamed official said that, according to the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened, and Iran would give up highly enriched uranium, while negotiations are still ongoing on how Tehran will handle its stock of highly enriched uranium.

US President Trump stated on the evening of the 24th via the social media platform Truth Social that if he reaches an agreement with Iran, it would definitely be a "good and proper agreement," and it would be better than the nuclear deal reached with Iran during Obama's administration, which he had withdrawn the US from.

Earlier that day, he said that US-Iran talks were proceeding "in an orderly and constructive manner."

On the 24th, representatives from Oman and Iran held discussions in Muscat, the capital of Oman, on a series of principles for regulating navigation in the Strait of Hormuz under international law, and exchanged views on safeguarding the security of shipping, trade, and supply chains.
