Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that Malaysia is committed to promoting ASEAN healthcare and regulatory integration and establishing our country's position as a regional leader in high-tech medical manufacturing and medical innovation.

He mentioned that the Ministry of Health, with the allocation of 45 billion ringgit in the 2025 budget, needs to enhance infrastructure, workforce skills, and retraining, while integrating artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G technology into the healthcare system.

He emphasized that these efforts must be implemented quickly, efficiently, and transparently.

At the closing ceremony of the 2024 International Medical Device Exhibition and Conference (IMDEC) yesterday, Anwar said, “With Malaysia set to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, we are fully promoting the development of Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) and are committed to leading the creation of a more efficient and integrated regional regulatory framework.”

“Our goal is not only to reduce market barriers for manufacturers but also to make safe and effective medical devices more widespread, ultimately improving patient care and strengthening the regional healthcare system.”

He emphasized that healthcare is a cornerstone of sustainable development and, like energy and digitalization as outlined in the ASEAN strategic agenda, it plays its role.

“Next year's ASEAN chairmanship will focus on the ASEAN Energy Network and digitalization. Healthcare has been identified as a key pillar for sustainable growth, aligning with both the ASEAN strategic framework and the new industrial blueprint.”

The Prime Minister also hopes for a transformation within the Ministry of Health, focusing on digital transformation and artificial intelligence, which requires significant changes, including a more transparent procurement process and improved internet connectivity.

Speaking about the 2024 IMDEC, Anwar said the event not only showcases Malaysia's strengths but also underscores our vision to become a key player in regional medical technology.

“This year's 28th Global Harmonization Working Party (GHWP) Annual Meeting marks a significant milestone for Malaysia as a host country, highlighting Malaysia's strategic role in promoting regulatory excellence and facilitating cross-border cooperation.”

“Therefore, I mentioned we must keep up with new developments to make adjustments, and the key role of the Ministry of Health must spearhead significant transformation.”

The 2024 IMDEC, starting from December 10, attracted over 600 international representatives and 10,000 visitors from various fields in the medical industry, including manufacturers, regulators, scholars, and innovators.

The exhibition provides a platform for industry dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration, aiming to address key challenges and explore technological advances that change the healthcare system.

Attendees included the Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Zulkifli, and the Minister of Economy, Rafizi.
