The “Xi-Trump Meeting” was held in Beijing on the 14th. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) stated that Chinese mainland leader Xi Jinping made incorrect remarks about Taiwan during the meeting. “The Republic of China” and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other—this is an objective fact and the current state of affairs in the Taiwan Strait.
According to CCTV News, Xi Jinping said at the meeting, “The Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations. If handled well, the bilateral relationship can remain generally stable; if not, the two countries will collide or even clash, pushing the entire China-U.S. relationship into a very dangerous situation. 'Taiwan independence' and peace in the Taiwan Strait are incompatible. Maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the U.S.”
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued a press release on the evening of the 14th, stating, “The Republic of China is a sovereign and independent nation, a responsible party in maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait, and an essential key force in global economic prosperity. The Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other—this is an objective fact and the current state of affairs in the Taiwan Strait.”
The MAC pointed out that the PLA has long conducted various gray zone and military harassment activities around the first island chain and the Taiwan Strait to coerce Taiwan. This is currently the greatest risk undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region. Taiwan will continue to build effective deterrent defense capabilities and resilience, and will continue to closely cooperate with allied countries including the United States.
The MAC reiterated that the government's cross-strait policy stance is stable and consistent, adheres to the “Four Commitments,” maintains neither arrogance nor submission, and is committed to maintaining the status quo. The MAC called on Beijing to face cross-strait realities, abandon political preconditions, and stop imposing compound pressure on Taiwan. “Engage in communication and dialogue with our elected government to resolve differences and pragmatically improve cross-strait relations.”
