KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- Alliance For A Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has called on the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of security screening procedures at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot in an alleged drug-smuggling case at Jakarta's airport.
Lee said that while the pilot is presumed innocent until proven guilty through the legal process, the incident raises serious questions about airport security protocols.
"How was the pilot able to pass through security screening at KLIA without the suspected drugs being detected?
"This incident warrants a thorough investigation to determine whether there were any weaknesses or gaps in the existing screening procedures. If such lapses are found, they must be addressed immediately to safeguard the integrity and reputation of Malaysia's aviation security system," he said in a statement today.
Lee urged enforcement agencies, including airport security operators, the police and the Civil Aviation Authority, to review current screening procedures, particularly those involving airport personnel and flight crew, to ensure that no one is exempt from strict security checks.
He stressed that public confidence in the country's aviation security must not be compromised and that security measures should be enforced consistently without exception.
The 39-year-old pilot was detained by Indonesian authorities at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after allegedly attempting to smuggle 25 kilogrammes of drugs.
