(Morocco, 16th) On the 15th, Moroccan security forces intercepted 294 people attempting to cross the border illegally near the Spanish North African exclave of Ceuta, including 248 from Sub-Saharan African countries and 46 Moroccans.
Currently, Moroccan security authorities continue to carry out operations in the border city of Fnideq and other routes leading to the border, deploying drones for aerial surveillance, mobile intervention units and water cannon vehicles, and strengthening security monitoring at checkpoints and along main roads.
At the end of July, the spread of misinformation about Spanish border policy on social media prompted around 80,000 people to risk illegally crossing from Morocco to Ceuta, causing Spain’s most severe border migration crisis in years, with at least 96 people dying in the process.
In view of recent posts online inciting people to collectively attempt another crossing on the 15th, Morocco and Spain are on high alert to prevent another wave of illegal crossings.
