Lee Kim Shin: Holistic Education Shapes Future Talents, CHMS Cultural Night Showcases Diverse Charms

(Miri, 14th) Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that the deeper meaning of education is not only to cope with exams, but more importantly, to help students know themselves, discover their potential, establish correct values, and cultivate resilience and gratitude, thereby shaping a new generation of talented individuals who are capable and responsible.

He pointed out that although academic achievements are important, a person’s success is by no means reflected only in the numbers on a report card. Students should find a balance between academics and interests, achieving overall development.

He said this while delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the 16th “Xiongxing Flying High” cultural night’s first performance at the Miri Civic Centre organized by CHMS yesterday evening.

He said that over 300 students performed on stage that night, showcasing their talents with confidence and passion. This was not just a cultural performance, but also a blooming of youth and dreams, which was very gratifying.

He praised CHMS for upholding the philosophy of holistic education for a long time. While emphasizing academic development, it also actively promotes extracurricular activities and arts education, providing students with a platform to showcase their talents.

He also pointed out that the evening’s program not only displayed the beauty of Chinese culture, but also integrated dance, music, and art performances from various ethnic groups, fully embodying Sarawak’s spirit of “unity in diversity, harmony in differences.”

“Tonight’s stage is a microcosm of Sarawak’s multicultural harmony and prosperity. Different cultures here appreciate and learn from each other, shining together.”

He stated that CHMS is not only an outstanding Chinese independent school, but also an educational institution that embodies the spirit of Sarawak, nurturing talents for society who possess cultural accomplishment, international vision, and a sense of social responsibility.

He pointed out that the Sarawak government has vigorously promoted educational development in recent years, including the implementation of free higher education from 2026 onwards to ease the burden on families. The government also recognizes the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) issued by Chinese independent schools, including it as one of the qualifications for the recruitment of civil servants.

In addition, the government also values Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), continually developing institutions such as CENTEXS and Sarawak Skills to provide young people with diverse development pathways to meet the needs of green energy, hydrogen economy, aviation, and high-tech industries.

He encouraged students that whether they choose to pursue further studies or technical training, as long as they find a direction suitable for themselves and continue to learn and work hard, they can shine in the future. He also wished the 16th CHMS cultural night a complete success, and praised the participating students for presenting wonderful performances through their efforts and dedication, showcasing the spirit of holistic education.
