Central Hospital in Sibu Holds Series of Events in Conjunction with World Thalassemia Day

(Sibu, 10th) Central Hospital in Sibu recently held a celebration for the 2025 World Thalassemia Day at Hall 5 of the hospital, aiming to raise public awareness and understanding of thalassemia and promote early detection and prevention.

The Head of Hematology, Robar Layou, said: 'May 8th every year is World Thalassemia Day, aimed at raising public awareness of thalassemia. The theme for this year is ‘Uniting to Combat Thalassemia: Community as One, Patient-Centric’, urging everyone to work together to support the thalassemia community and prioritize the needs of patients.’

She added that thalassemia is a blood disorder affecting red blood cells, inherited from parents, and patients require continuous life-long blood transfusions from a young age.

Robar Layou also urged the local community to help thalassemia patients by donating blood or providing moral support and raising awareness about thalassemia.

The event also emphasized the importance of blood donation, aiming to encourage the public to participate in blood donation to support the long-term transfusion needs of thalassemia patients. Donating blood can not only save lives but also brings significant physical and mental health benefits to donors, including stress relief, improved emotional health, better physical health, alleviating negative emotions, fostering a sense of purpose, and enhancing social connections.

The celebration also focused on thalassemia patients engaged in small-scale commercial activities, such as selling food, beverages, and handicrafts.

The Hematology Department collaborated with the Blood Donation Center to hold multiple roadshows and organized an exhibition on thalassemia.

On May 30th, the hospital will hold a patient education seminar for thalassemia patients, aimed at increasing their understanding of the disease, treatment methods, and complications, providing relevant support, and helping thalassemia patients reduce excessively high ferritin levels in the body.
