The Perlis Road Transport Department conducted a crackdown on illegal taxis (‘prebet sapu’) at the Arau train station, and three drivers suspected of illegally transporting passengers will be charged in court.
On Sunday night (6th), the Perlis Road Transport Department's Road Safety and Corporate Affairs Unit posted on Facebook stating that charging passengers in a private car is a violation and actions can be taken under the 1987 Road Transport Act (Act 333) for misuse of vehicle licenses.
If found guilty, one could be fined not less than 1,000 Malaysian Ringgit but not more than 10,000 Malaysian Ringgit, or face imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
The Perlis Road Transport Department indicated that actions to curb private cars from transporting passengers illegally would continue, and the department welcomes any information from the public about road violations to more effectively carry out targeted enforcement actions.
The department also advised all citizens against using illegal passenger transport services as accidents could lead to various risks.
The agency urges the public to use legitimate public transportation services, such as buses, taxis, or e-hailing services. Road safety is a shared responsibility.
