(Kuching, 3rd) Deputy Minister of the Economy Datuk Hanifah Taib highlighted that as the nation gradually ages, the federal government needs to establish a long-term blueprint to fully review the issues and demands related to an aging society.

He urged the federal government to develop a long-term blueprint to fully assess the issues and needs associated with an aging society.

She stated that both the federal and Sarawak governments have launched various initiatives to ensure the welfare of the elderly, not just in healthcare but also in aspects of daily life.

“Although the federal and Sarawak governments have made efforts, I always feel these are not enough and hope that these measures can address the current shortcomings.”

Datuk Hanifah Taib pointed out that Malaysia is about to become an aging nation, with those aged 60 and above comprising a significant portion of the population by 2032.

“We should not only focus on the needs of children but also address the needs of the elderly population.”

She revealed that eventually, everyone will age, and therefore, people must be more aware of aging population issues and the needs of the elderly.

She stated that in facing an aging society, the younger generation should also give back to the elderly, thanking them for their contributions to the country's development.

“We also need to focus on the mental health of the elderly; globally, loneliness among seniors is a significant issue. We need positive thinking to warm the hearts of the elderly.”

She encouraged volunteers to engage in services caring for the elderly, emphasizing the importance of understanding and sharing life with seniors.

Datuk Hanifah Taib noted that with the internet available, one can easily call or even video call with elders. These technological advances can help build connections with seniors and reduce their feelings of loneliness.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the annual charity sale for Kuching Lions Nursing Home, Datuk Hanifah Taib praised the Lions Club for their hard work over the years in providing a home for the elderly.

She hopes that the Kuching Lions Nursing Home can set an excellent example and make more people aware that it is indeed possible to create a comprehensive nursing ecosystem.

Addressing the financial challenges faced by the Kuching Lions Nursing Home, she stated she would do her best to assist with the home's financial needs.
