(Miri, 3rd) The Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development of Sarawak, Dato Sri Roland Sagah, emphasized that research is crucial for driving sustainable development in Borneo and the region. He highly praised the holding of the first Borneo University Alliance Postgraduate Symposium (KUUB) in 2024.

Due to principal guest Roland Sagah's inability to attend, his speech was read by Deputy Minister Dato Annuar Rapaee, who stated at the opening ceremony that this symposium, themed "Transforming Borneo into a Global Sustainable Development Hub," highlights the key role of research in addressing global challenges and driving regional development. The event provides an important platform for postgraduate students to showcase research results, exchange knowledge, and build cross-border partnerships.

He pointed out that this symposium aligns with Sarawak's Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), aiming to create a sustainable, innovative, and prosperous Sarawak through research in areas such as energy, biodiversity, agriculture, technology, and education.

He mentioned the regional cooperation characteristic of this symposium, showcasing the spirit of collaboration among ASEAN countries in tackling shared challenges like climate change, food security, and technological innovation. The active participation of ASEAN researchers also demonstrates the shared commitment to utilizing expertise to develop Borneo into a global leader in sustainable development.

The Sarawak government places high importance on investment in education, talent development, and research infrastructure, viewing them as the cornerstone of a sustainable and prosperous future. He urged delegates to seize this opportunity to push the boundaries of research and develop solutions that benefit communities and ecosystems.

He also praised the efforts of Curtin University Malaysia Campus and the member universities of the Borneo University Alliance, calling them important contributions to advancing research excellence and realizing Sarawak's sustainable development agenda.

Finally, he welcomed the delegates from Brunei, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, Australia, and Malaysia, thanked the organizers and organizing committee for their hard work, and wished the symposium a great success.
