Poland Recalls Ambassador to Hungary, Diplomatic Relations Downgraded

Published at Jul 18, 2025 02:23 pm
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Frąckiewicz stated on the 17th that Poland has recalled its ambassador to Hungary and that diplomatic relations between the two countries have been downgraded to the chargé d'affaires level.

He said that Poland's ambassador to Hungary, Kneciuk, completed his term on July 15, and that the current Polish diplomatic representative in Hungary holds the title of chargé d'affaires ad interim.

He pointed out that as Hungary had granted political asylum to Poland’s former Deputy Justice Minister Romanowski, Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski recalled Kneciuk for "indefinite consultations" in December last year.

Romanowski is facing corruption charges and a European arrest warrant was issued against him by a Polish court.

Frąckiewicz said Hungary's action violated EU principles and was an unfriendly move towards Poland.

Meanwhile, on the 17th, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter confirmed the relevant news in Budapest.

He stated that the Hungarian government wishes to maintain good cooperation with Poland, but the current Polish leadership is evidently not interested in this.
