The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that during last week’s meeting between the Chinese and US presidents, the two leaders exchanged views on artificial intelligence (AI) and agreed for the two countries to launch an intergovernmental dialogue on AI.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a regular press conference, in response to a question, that as two major AI powers, China and the US should work together to promote the development and governance of AI, advancing AI to better serve the progress of human civilization and the common wellbeing of the international community.

He stated that during US President Trump’s visit to China, the two heads of state engaged in constructive exchanges on the topic of artificial intelligence and agreed to carry out governmental dialogue on AI.

From Wednesday to Friday last week (13th to 15th), Trump paid a state visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Earlier this month, The Wall Street Journal cited informed sources as reporting that China and the US are considering launching formal discussions on artificial intelligence topics.

US Treasury Secretary Bessent will represent the US side in the proposed AI discussions, while the Chinese side has yet to designate an official counterpart to participate.
