China produced a total of 1.99 billion tons of raw coal in the first five months of the year, an increase of 110 million tons year-on-year, setting a new record high for the same period.
China Central Television, citing the latest data released by the China National Coal Association, reported that in mid-June, coal inventories at power plants nationwide stood at around 210 million tons, about 3 million tons more than at the end of March, enough to last about 35 days.
According to the report, this output provides a solid guarantee for energy supply during the summer peak season.
Since the start of summer, many parts of China have experienced persistent high temperatures. On Friday (July 4), electricity load exceeded 1.4 billion kilowatts, setting a new historical high.
Although China is ambitious in tackling climate change, coal remains an important energy source, and production has increased under electricity demand pressure. This has led to external doubts about whether China can achieve its goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and realizing net zero emissions by 2060.
