(Kuching, 5th) The Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Customs Department successfully dismantled a drug smuggling syndicate, seizing 5,280 grams of marijuana with a market value of approximately RM158,340 hidden in packaging paper resembling “milk chocolate.”
According to a news report by TVS, the Sarawak Customs Department director Norizan Yaya stated that on January 22 at 11 am, a team of customs officers from the anti-narcotics division and the ground operations unit of the enforcement department arrested a man claiming to receive a courier package at a courier company on Lee Ling Road in Kuching, leading to this breakthrough.
“The team inspected the contents of the courier package and found 25 packets of dangerous drugs, specifically marijuana, wrapped in ‘milk chocolate’ packaging paper. Their modus operandi was to use courier services to air transport narcotics from Peninsular Malaysia to Sarawak, declaring the goods as 'commodities' to avoid detection by the authorities.”
Currently, the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In this regard, he urged the public to assist JKDM in combating smuggling crimes, particularly cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, firecrackers, drugs, vehicles, etc. He also advised not to engage in such illegal activities.
“Smuggling not only results in revenue loss for the country but also poses a threat to national security and the well-being of the people.”
The Malaysian Customs Department also encourages the public to provide information on any smuggling activities by calling the customs toll-free hotline at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest state customs office, assuring that the identity of each informant will be kept confidential.
