Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that he was the one who submitted former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib's pardon application to the Pardon Board meeting chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He said he attended the Pardon Board meeting on December 8, 2023, and at that time, Najib's pardon application was not yet presented.
“I submitted the pardon to the Pardon Board, you can ask the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, because I believe this matter needs to be considered.”
Anwar stated that although he criticized the 1MDB case, since Najib is already incarcerated, every citizen has the right to seek a royal pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
He said this in response to a question from Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin during the Prime Minister's Question Time in Parliament, regarding whether there is an issue with the additional directive for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib’s house arrest.
“I submitted Najib's pardon application to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as every citizen or prisoner has the right to apply, and considering Najib’s status, it is worthy of reasonable consideration, and at that time the Agong consented.”
“There were 11 agendas in the meeting, 10 of which were submitted according to procedure by the legal team, and when it came to the 11th item, the Agong asked me to explain Najib's pardon application.”
