(Russia, 25th) — On the 24th, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement noting that, during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rubio held a meeting and exchanged views on resolving the Ukraine crisis.
The statement said that, on the basis of the consensus reached at the Alaska meeting between Russian and US leaders, both sides reiterated their willingness to seek a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis. During the meeting, Lavrov emphasized that Russia is willing to coordinate with the United States to address the root causes of the Ukraine conflict. He also stated that the policies implemented by Ukraine and some European countries to prolong the conflict are unacceptable.
The statement added that the two foreign ministers also communicated regarding Russia-US bilateral relations, and both stressed the need to continue consolidating the foundation laid by the two heads of state for the normalization of bilateral relations, and to intensify efforts to restore normal operations of the two countries’ diplomatic missions. The foreign ministries of both countries will also continue constructive dialogue.
On August 15, Russian President Putin and US President Trump met in Alaska. Both parties gave positive assessments of the meeting, but did not reach agreements on issues such as a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.
On the other hand, US State Department spokesperson Pigott stated that Rubio "reiterated President Trump’s call to stop the killing and emphasized the need for Russia to take meaningful steps for a lasting solution to the Russia-Ukraine war."
