China-Europe Freight Trains Resume Passage as Poland Announces Reopening of Border Checkpoints with Belarus

(China, 25th) – After 11 days, the previously halted China-Europe freight trains now have a timetable for resumption of traffic. According to a report from CCTV News, Polish Prime Minister Tusk stated that, starting from the early hours of the 25th, Poland will reopen border checkpoints with Belarus, but he also noted that the government will close the border points again if necessary.
According to Yicai (China Business Network), multiple Polish logistics companies and freight agents have confirmed this news. In the Malaszewicze and Brest areas, which connect Poland and Belarus, the long-awaited China-Europe freight trains can finally continue their journey. “The entire industry is cheering with joy.”
This closure of the Polish border checkpoints began on the 12th. The Polish side stated that, due to the Russia and Belarus “Zapad-2025” joint military exercises and ensuing drone incursions, all border checkpoints between Poland and Belarus (including road and rail) would be closed until “the safety of Polish citizens is fully guaranteed.”
The closure of the border with Belarus caused the China-Europe freight trains, which regularly pass through the Malaszewicze checkpoint, to come to a standstill. The China-Europe freight train is the most important land freight corridor connecting China and Europe, passing through Brest in Belarus after Russia, and arriving at the Malaszewicze hub in Poland before being distributed to over 220 cities in 26 European countries.
According to data from the European Rail Freight Association, more than 85 to 90% of China-Europe freight trains pass through or arrive in Poland, with Malaszewicze serving as an effective eastern gateway into the EU.
On this border incident, Yang Jie, General Manager of Eurasian Rail International Freight Forwarding (Shanghai) Company, believes it is a rare occurrence. He said that since the China-Europe freight train service began in 2014, the Malaszewicze checkpoint had never been closed, always serving as the main channel for these freight trains. Although there have occasionally been cases of congestion at the checkpoint, congestion and closure are entirely different, and he considers this time truly unusual.
