Sibu,14 Mei : Sarawak is intensifying efforts to develop green energy as it aims to become the Asean hub for renewable energy through the Asean Green Initiative (AGI).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that following the state’s shift to a digital economy, the focus has now moved towards realising a green economy powered by renewable energy.

“We are leveraging AI and digitalisation to drive this new phase of our economic strategy. Our goal is to position Sarawak as the renewable energy hub in Asean through AGI,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Rimbunan Hijau 50th anniversary celebration dinner at Tun Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) last night (May 13).

He highlighted Sarawak’s advantage in natural resources, particularly water and gas, which can be used to produce hydrogen, a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

“We are fortunate. From water (H₂O) and gas (CH₄), we can extract hydrogen, which can power our economy. This aligns with our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles,” he said.
Abang Johari also stressed the need to invest in human capital.

“Two weeks ago, we had a meaningful discussion with the London School of Economics on addressing global economic challenges.

“The professors pointed out that Sarawak is fortunate to have natural capital, untouched forests that act as carbon sinks, a hydrogen energy supply, and a population that can be trained,” he said.

The Premier said that with rich natural assets and a focus on developing talent, Sarawak is poised to become a major player in the region’s green economy.
