(Bandar Seri Begawan, 23rd) — A contractor was fined $4,000 by the Licensing and Enforcement Unit of the Brunei-Muara District Office after allegedly dumping waste illegally on a vacant lot in Kampong Lugu, following a public complaint.
The Brunei-Muara District Office stated that upon receiving a complaint from the public about illegal dumping activities, enforcement personnel immediately proceeded to investigate the location and discovered that the waste belonged to a contractor involved in a building renovation project.
After investigation, the contractor was issued a fine notice by the authorities for violating Chapter 30, Section 12(1)(e) and Section 12(1)(f)(ii) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.
The company has been given a 7-day deadline to settle the fine. If payment is not made within the deadline, the case will be brought to court under the relevant laws.
If found guilty, offenders can face a maximum fine of $30,000, up to 12 months’ imprisonment, or both.
The Brunei-Muara District Office also expressed gratitude to the responsible members of the public who provided relevant information, stating that public cooperation helps strengthen enforcement actions against illegal dumping of trash and waste.
The authorities also urged the public, if they discover any illegal dumping activities, to provide details of the location and photographs, and report them to the authorities via the Licensing and Enforcement Unit's WhatsApp hotline, to assist enforcement agencies in taking further action.
