(Bandar Seri Begawan, 6th) Director Xiao Linyuan of the Nanjing Educational Science Research Institute recently led a delegation to visit Brunei's Chung Hwa Middle School for a two-day academic research activity.
The purpose of this research is to understand the teaching situation of Chinese and Mathematics subjects at Chung Hwa and to exchange and discuss ways to enhance teaching methods.
The delegation members include Han Weiping, a teacher from Nanjing Foreign Language School, Jiang Zhaoyu and Jiao Lijun from Nanjing Lamma Cultural Communication Co., Ltd., as well as Wang Jianping from Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute.
The visit of the Nanjing Educational Science Research Institute research team received a warm welcome from the Board of Directors and the school at Chung Hwa. Chairman Yang Dezhen, Deputy Chairman Lin Wenhua, Vice Chairman Lin Mingjie, Vice Chairman Lin Dencai, Supervising Board Member Dr. Yang Juzhuang, Principal Xu Yuelan, Vice Principal Ma Haiyao, Assistant Principal Chen Meidian, Acting Assistant Principal Du Xiuying, and teachers of Chinese and Mathematics subjects jointly welcomed the guests. Both sides held a seminar in the Zhao Ying Room first and then moved to the Hu Wenhua Hall to observe the teaching activities of Chinese and Mathematics subjects.
At the seminar, Chairman Yang Dezhen, on behalf of the board and all teachers and students, welcomed Director Xiao Linyuan’s delegation for their research visit.
He said that since its founding 103 years ago, Chung Hwa has adhered to the mission of "inheriting Chinese culture and cultivating talents", upholding the philosophy of "emphasizing three languages, refining five educations", committed to nurturing the nation's leading talents.
He pointed out that Chung Hwa focuses on promoting traditional Chinese culture, starting with fundamental teaching, guiding students to study literary works piece by piece, learning poems line by line, and through a systematic training of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, allowing students to deeply root themselves in Chinese linguistic foundation and appreciate its charm.
"In mathematics teaching, we emphasize the combination of theory and practice, employing diversified teaching methods to stimulate interest in mathematics, cultivate logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Despite this, we are fully aware that the path of education is endless, and there are still many aspects that need learning and improvements in teaching method innovations and quality enhancement." Chairman Yang added.
He emphasized that the Nanjing Educational Science Research Institute has remarkable achievements in the field of educational research, boasting rich and advanced teaching experiences. Chung Hwa hopes to take advantage of this rare opportunity to listen to experts' valuable opinions, learn from successful models and innovative measures in Chinese and Mathematics teaching in Nanjing, and inject new vitality into the school's teaching.
He also looks forward to this exchange bringing new ideas for teaching reform to Chung Hwa and taking this opportunity to build a platform for long-term cooperation between both parties, engaging in in-depth collaboration in teacher training, curriculum development, etc., to jointly promote educational development.
Director Xiao Linyuan of the Nanjing Educational Science Research Institute also shared his upheld "Four Must” teaching philosophy at the seminar—“Thought Must Be True, Research Must Be Practical, Conduct Must Be Correct, Strategy Must Be Innovative.”
He stated that for a successful and efficient teaching activity, students must first be "willing" to learn. The core of this stage is to enhance student participation. The basic design of teaching activities should include external and professional image design, scenario design related to life and emotions, and dialogue design that encourages interaction.
Next, students must be able to "learn", with the focus of this stage on guiding thinking and deep learning, requiring teaching strategies such as problem design, blank space design, and variation design.
Finally, students must “learn well.” This stage emphasizes passing the basics, standard feedback (i.e., precise teaching), and focuses on the enhancement of literacy, including mathematical literacy and character literacy.
He pointed out that regardless of which subject is taught, aside from knowledge transmission and skills training, the cultivation of character is also essential. Teachers should explore how to shape students' good character through teaching activities by combining subject characteristics with moral education strategies from multiple perspectives.
Taking mathematics teaching as an example, character cultivation should run through the entire process of knowledge construction: such as cultivating a sense of responsibility through rigorous training, conveying spiritual power through mathematics culture, and developing social virtues in collaborative exploration, thus achieving the dual goals of “knowledge acquisition” and “character perfection.”
Undoubtedly, this academic research by the Nanjing Educational Science Research Institute marks the beginning of "speaking with data and implementing with actions," and it also initiates a process of two-way summary, results transformation, and reflective improvement. Not only can it promote the reform practice and systematization of teaching, but it can also assist educational research in progressing from "discovering problems" to "solving problems," ultimately achieving the profound goal of "promoting teaching through research and educating people through education."
