(Miri, 11th) The four-day Miri School-Level Softball Tournament concluded successfully at noon today at Miri St. Joseph's School grounds, attracting a record participation of 8 men's teams and 9 women's teams, the most teams ever in a school-level softball event in Sarawak, showcasing the local students' great enthusiasm for the sport of softball.
The closing ceremony was held today, attended by guests including Miri Softball Association Chairman Alex Chu Chin Siang, Critters Softball Club Chairman Leslie Lim, Sarawak Softball Association Chairman Aaron Abel Donald Lingan, and Miri Education Office representative Dzulfikhar bin Awang (Deputy Director of Co-curricular Activities and Student Development Unit), marking the successful conclusion of the event.
In his speech, Zhu Jingxiang expressed gratitude on behalf of the Miri Softball Association and Critters Softball Club to St. Joseph’s School Principal Peter Use Lenjau for the cooperation and support in facilitating the development of local softball.
He pointed out that the association and its members actively advocate for upgrading local softball infrastructures, which includes improving the field's grass, soil, and drainage system, and providing better training equipment, to create a safer and more comfortable environment for competitions and training.
He said these enhancements not only benefit softball athletes but also the entire community, allowing broader use of the facilities for various sports and recreational activities, further enhancing the quality of urban life.
Alex Chu added that the Miri Softball Association consistently promotes various competitions, training camps, and friendly matches, which not only improve local players' competitive levels but also promote the culture of softball across different community levels, making it a popular leisure and competitive activity.
He mentioned that over the years, the association has successfully cultivated many excellent players who have represented Miri and even Sarawak in national and international softball events, glorifying their hometown and inspiring more young people to engage in the sport, aspiring to be future sports representatives.
