U.S. Plans to Mint $1 Coin with Trump Portrait to Commemorate 250th Anniversary of Independence

The U.S. Treasury Department has confirmed plans to mint a $1 coin featuring President Trump’s portrait to mark the country’s 250th anniversary next year. The obverse of the coin bears a side profile of Trump, while the reverse features an image of Trump clenching his fist before the American flag, with "Fight, Fight, Fight" inscribed along the upper edge.

Highlights the Fist-Raising Pose After Last Year's Assassination Attempt

Treasury Treasurer Beach posted on social media, sharing the coin’s preliminary design, which shows Trump’s side portrait on the obverse with "LIBERTY" at the top, "IN GOD WE TRUST" below, and the years 1776 and 2026.

The reverse of the coin features a portrait of Trump raising his right fist before the American flag and displays the word “Fight” three times, a design resembling the slogan Trump shouted to his supporters after surviving an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania last year.

Beach stated in the post that the design is not fake news, noting that a preliminary plan is being drafted, and said more news would be shared as soon as the ongoing federal government shutdown crisis is resolved.

White House: Believes Trump Would Like It

Treasury Secretary Bassent also shared the post, confirming that the Treasury Department plans to create a Trump-portrait $1 coin.

A Treasury spokesperson said in a statement, “Despite the government shutdown forced by radical left-wing groups, it is clear: Under Trump’s historic leadership, our nation is embracing its 250th anniversary in a stronger, more prosperous and better state than ever before. Although the final design for the anniversary $1 coin has yet to be determined, the current draft already reflects our nation’s and democracy’s perseverance in the face of great obstacles.”

Regarding news of the commemorative coin, White House Press Secretary Levitt responded that it’s unclear if Trump is aware of the plan, but said, “I believe he would like it.”

Facing Legal Controversy

However, according to U.S. coinage design laws, the image of any living former or current president cannot appear on coins; former presidents can only appear at least two years after their death. Due to legal controversy, it is still unclear whether the commemorative coin will actually be minted.

Additionally, Congress previously passed the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act to mark the 250th anniversary, authorizing the Treasury to mint $1 coins symbolizing the anniversary from January 1, 2026 for one year. However, the act also specifies: “No design for the reverse of the coins may contain a portrait or bust of any person, whether living or dead.”

Furthermore, the design released by Beach features a portrait of Trump on the reverse that is more than a bust, raising questions about whether this violates the above regulation.
