(Kuching, 6th) The Sarawak government has taken a significant step in developing its aerospace industry by establishing a strategic partnership with the global aviation leader, Airbus.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the official visit to Airbus headquarters has opened new opportunities for collaboration in six key areas. The cooperation aims to position Sarawak as a new aerospace hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
He highlighted these areas, including the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Sarawak is actively researching SAF production to align with the global goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
"Secondly, Airbus’ collaboration with local institutions such as ICATS will expand human capital development in the aerospace sector by introducing aerospace-related training programs and curricula. This initiative will provide Sarawakian students with opportunities for industrial training at international standards," he said.
Abang Johari made these remarks at a press conference following his delegation’s working visit to Airbus facilities and ATR headquarters, a leading global turboprop aircraft manufacturer, in Toulouse, France.
He further elaborated on the third agreement, which focuses on developing an aerospace support industry ecosystem.
Sarawak will explore the potential for manufacturing composite materials and synthetic gas leather for the aviation industry, as well as avionics technology and AI-based smart chip instruments.
"The fourth agreement is to enhance the digitization of travel and flight services by introducing the ‘Digital Journey’ concept, integrating ticket bookings, ART transportation systems, and accommodation into a seamless digital platform," the Premier said.
Additionally, the fifth consensus involves forming a Sarawak-Airbus joint team to map out the roadmap for Sarawak's aerospace industry development, drawing on both parties' expertise.
"We will establish a team on our side, and Airbus will form their own. This collaboration aims to consolidate industry expertise, which could catalyze growth and open new opportunities for international-level aerospace development," he added.
Lastly, Abang Johari said the sixth agreement focuses on developing an Aerotropolis to strengthen Sarawak’s aviation sector.
"The Sarawak government plans to develop a 100-acre Aerotropolis, an integrated hub where all constructed facilities are interconnected, enhancing efficiency and supporting the aviation ecosystem," he explained.
Earlier, Abang Johari led the delegation to visit ATR’s headquarters in France, followed by a professional exchange hosted by Airbus International President Wouter Van Wersch at the Airbus customer showcase, Agoahub, and a tour of the Airbus exhibition.
