Saturday (July 4th) marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) posted on social media that Taipei’s famous landmark, Taipei 101, was illuminated in red, white, and blue lights, with the words “Enduring U.S.-Taiwan Friendship” flashing on its exterior. AIT described this as a symbol of the deep and lasting friendship between the peoples of the U.S. and Taiwan.

On Saturday evening, AIT wrote on Facebook: “Tonight, at this very moment, Taipei 101 is glowing in red, white, and blue, paying tribute to the ideals of freedom that have guided us for 250 years. The words ‘Enduring U.S.-Taiwan Friendship,’ flashing on the 101’s facade, not only attract countless eyes but are also a testament to the steadfast ties between the peoples of the U.S. and Taiwan.”

AIT mentioned that on this highly historic milestone night, Taiwan joined the “Freedom 250 Global Lighting Initiative”, shining alongside iconic landmarks around the world such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Brandenburg Gate in Germany, and Namsan Tower in Seoul.

AIT also quoted Director Sandra Oudkirk, saying she was honored to gather with Taiwan Legislative Yuan President Han Kuo-yu, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, Taipei 101 Chairman Cynthia Chien, and many key partners from both the U.S. and Taiwan to jointly celebrate the United States’ 250th Independence Day.

Oudkirk stated that the words “Enduring U.S.-Taiwan Friendship” shimmering on Taipei 101’s facade not only illuminate the Taipei night sky but also vividly demonstrate the deep, ever-strengthening, rock-solid friendship between the peoples of the U.S. and Taiwan.

She added that in the future, the U.S. and Taiwan will continue moving forward hand-in-hand to defend the shared and cherished values of freedom and democracy.
