Affected by Dry and Cold Air, Southern China Experiences Extreme Dryness

Due to the frequent influence of dry and cold air, many places in southern China are experiencing extremely rare dryness for this time of year.

According to a report by China News Service, monitoring by the National Meteorological Center shows that, looking at actual rainfall anomalies over the past 10 days, most areas in central and eastern China have seen rainfall more than 80% below average compared to the same period in previous years, with extreme dryness occurring in many parts of the south.

Based on monitoring, on the afternoon of the 27th, relative humidity in many parts of southern China dropped below 30%, and in some cities fell below 20%, resulting in unusually dry weather for this time of year. Among these, Nanjing and Wuhan saw 14%, Hangzhou, Hefei, and Nanchang 18%, Xiamen 21%, Shanghai (Xujiahui) 22%, and Nanning and Shenzhen 23%.

From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. that day, relative humidity in Luotian, Hubei was only 9%, breaking the local record for driest November ever recorded. In Yingshan, Hubei, the relative humidity was 9%, and in Yuexi, Anhui it was 10%—levels of dryness rarely seen during the same period.

Meteorological departments forecast that in the next three days, cold air will remain active. Except for regions like the northeast where there will be relatively more rain and snow, most of central and eastern China will continue to see less rain and snow and persistently dry air.
