Miri MP Chiew Choon Man Delivers Speech during debate of Budget 2025 in Parliament

(Miri 22nd) Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man said during a speech in the parliament that the Miri Art Headquarters and the Miri Central Office are in relatively poor condition. The sky, walls, wiring, and roof leaks are all concerning, making it difficult for police staff to continue living or working there. Last August, a fire broke out at the dormitories of the Miri Art Headquarters.

He said, I appreciate the local government's maintenance of the national police department, and I urge the local government to allocate a larger and more adequate budget specifically for the improvement, upgrade, or reconstruction of the national police and the national police force, to always protect the welfare and safety of our police personnel.

“I also want to express the long-standing concerns of the people nationwide regarding traffic congestion issues, especially during weekends and holidays, causing users to wait for several hours.” The people of Brunei have repeatedly reflected on this issue, and its impact on both countries can be seen. I fully understand this frustration.

He stated that by randomly inquiring with business people and tourists in Miri and the local Brunei area, he noted that if the congestion problem at the Sungai Tujuh checkpoint can be resolved, it could at least increase the number of visitors to Miri by 30% to 50% and bring economic profits not only benefiting Sarawak's platform but also increasing foreign exchange due to Malaysia's increased demand.

“I am very grateful that the Ministry of Home Affairs is paying attention to this matter, especially as recently, there have been visits by public officials to the checkpoint. This visit shows the government's attention to the necessity of upgrading the checkpoint. In addition to the additional counters and routes implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs, as far as I know, the state government is proposing to reopen the old CIQ area to add more counters and routes. I request the department to provide more information and details on this issue. Proposal.”

He pointed out that police are on the front lines and are often dispatched to the most remote areas, including areas without paved roads or stone roads. In the operation, vehicles are one of the most important assets. However, the condition of vehicles they are currently using is far from adequate.

“We have paid attention to the condition of vehicles used by the Miri force. Once existing vehicles pass through, they are no longer suitable for working in challenging terrains. In fact, according to our understanding, when going to inland areas, members are forced to work in challenging terrains. Physical conditions cause frequent head injuries as members' heads often hit vehicle walls. Therefore, I request the government to provide more funds to upgrade PGA equipment and vehicles, such as new four-wheel drive vehicles and necessary equipment.”
