(Kuala Lumpur, 26th) Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar pointed out that, in the face of rising protectionism and shifting supply chains, ASEAN must have the courage to establish new partnerships and the foresight to deepen existing ones.
In his opening address at the 47th ASEAN Summit, he said that ASEAN must never remain stagnant, and resilience depends on adaptability.
He said that the relative peace and prosperity enjoyed by ASEAN for nearly 60 years has not sustained itself but must be prolonged through cooperation and strengthened by shared objectives.
"Therefore, ASEAN is deepening economic ties, expanding trade volume, and enhancing competitiveness."
"We are also advancing the construction of the ASEAN Power Grid (APG). The new APG financing mechanism will help bridge funding gaps and accelerate ASEAN’s transition towards cleaner and safer energy."
He added that the region is also promoting the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework and a regional electric vehicle ecosystem, laying the foundation for sustainable industry and green growth.
"With ASEAN’s digital economy expected to double to $2 trillion by 2030, we have agreed to expedite the finalization of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement by 2026."
"In order to ensure that technology always remains our servant and not our master, we will establish the ASEAN Artificial Intelligence Safety Network (AI SAFE), incorporating ethical standards, security safeguards, and sound governance into AI applications."
In the spirit of strengthening cooperation with other economies, Anwar pointed out that Malaysia earlier this year hosted the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, as well as the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
"Tomorrow, we will hold the 5th Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Leaders' Summit to unlock the potential of the world’s largest free trade area."
"We also welcome the Chair’s distinguished guests from Brazil and South Africa to attend the 20th East Asia Summit. This is an important step in expanding ASEAN’s cooperation with BRICS and the G20, and strengthening ASEAN’s links with the Global South."
