(Kuala Lumpur, 26th) Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar pointed out that Thailand and Cambodia will sign a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said this agreement reflects a firm belief that even in times full of uncertainty, understanding and dialogue can prevail.
"Later this morning, when Thailand and Cambodia sign a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur, the whole world will witness the achievements that can be made through firm belief."
"This reminds us that reconciliation is not a concession, but a manifestation of courage. Once peace is chosen, the future of a nation can be reshaped."
He said this during his opening speech at the 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits this morning.
This peace agreement is a milestone in regional diplomacy for ASEAN, demonstrating ASEAN's commitment to preventing conflicts, maintaining stability, and promoting cooperation during Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
Thailand and Cambodia have long had disputes over an 817-kilometer border, and a military conflict broke out on July 24 this year along their border.
On July 28, Anwar presided over a special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at the Prime Minister's official residence in Putrajaya. Then Acting Thai Prime Minister Prawit and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet attended the meeting and agreed to an immediate ceasefire, successfully easing border tensions.
This ceasefire has been widely regarded as a major achievement for ASEAN, not only preventing further military escalation but also ensuring the safety of thousands of people.
