Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said that with US President-elect Trump about to take office, cross-strait relations need to maintain peace and stability more than ever.
Ma Ying-jeou led a delegation to visit mainland China from the 18th to the 26th of this month, and returned to Taiwan in the afternoon after concluding the trip on the 26th.
In an interview at the airport, Ma Ying-jeou said that he brought students from the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation's "Great Nine School" to visit Harbin and Chengdu. He hopes that by promoting youth exchanges across the strait, goodwill can accumulate among the people on both sides, steering away from war.
Ma Ying-jeou stated that he has been out of public office for eight years and that the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation is just a non-governmental organization. Although its capabilities are limited, for the sake of Taiwan's people, the foundation will continue to strive to promote cross-strait exchanges and enhance peace and stability across the strait.
He believes that the most important aspect of current cross-strait relations is government departments. "Facts have proven that the 1992 Consensus reached based on the Constitution of the Republic of China and opposing Taiwan independence remain the only shared political foundation between the two sides currently."
Ma Ying-jeou said that Trump will return to the White House at the end of next month, and cross-strait relations need to maintain peace and stability even more.
Ma Ying-jeou urged Taiwan's current President Lai Ching-te to promptly adjust cross-strait policy, abandon the "Anti-China, Harm Taiwan" path, which is not feasible, and let the two sides return to a path of peaceful development to ensure smooth exchanges between the people across the strait, thus maintaining the interests and welfare of Taiwan's people.
