Wong Tak Kin Returns Home with Debut Film, Angela Yuen Praises Malaysian Accent as Cute

Wong Tak Kin, who grew up in Ipoh, returned to Malaysia with his first self-written and directed feature film "The Fourth Act" to attend the opening ceremony of the "Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation—Kuala Lumpur Stop". Over 30 to 40 friends and relatives made a special trip from Ipoh to support him. After going to Hong Kong in 2010 to study filmmaking and working as a script supervisor for acclaimed director Derek Yee from the age of 19, he worked his way up to assistant director, and has finally brought his first film back to Malaysia. He frankly admitted that meeting the audience in Kuala Lumpur with his own work was both emotional and an honor. When asked if he would consider making films in Malaysia, he laughed and replied: “Of course I would!” He hopes that "The Fourth Act" will have the opportunity for a proper theatrical release in Malaysia and win audience support, so that in the future he might have the chance to return and shoot films. He also revealed that he would most like to shoot a film based on his parents' story.

The "Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation 2026—Kuala Lumpur Stop" opened on the night of the 21st at The Exchange TRX's AURUM Theatre. In addition to director Wong Tak Kin and actress Angela Yuen (Yuen Lai Lam) of "The Fourth Act", "Mothers" director Amber Hui (Hu Cui Er) and actress Elaine Jin (Jin Yan Ling), along with "Waves of Life" actors Adam Pak (Chu Jian Ran) and Fish Liew (Yang Si Yong), also attended and met the Malaysian audience in person. Wong Tak Kin and Angela Yuen later joined a post-screening sharing for "The Fourth Act", discussing their creative and filming experiences.

Angela Yuen, who filmed in Malaysia several years ago and is returning after a long time, was excited and revealed she loves eating durian. Asked if she would consider filming in Malaysia, she first smiled and said in a Malaysian accent, “I want a cup of Kopi,” praising the local accent as cute, then said: “Sure, just invite me and I’ll come!”

At the "25th New York Asian Film Festival," Angela Yuen won the Asian Newcomer Award for "The Fourth Act," in which her character Hanna shows great contrast before and after. She admitted that this is one of the most complex roles she has ever played, presenting a real challenge: "Hanna has enormous duality." She described how Hanna appears innocent and naïve at first, only gradually revealing another side as the plot progresses, with the screenplay’s twists allowing the audience to see the character in an unexpected light.

Wong Tak Kin revealed that he had written Hanna's character specifically for Angela Yuen from the start, especially looking forward to her showing a side never seen before by audiences. He said he always knew Angela could nail the first half of the character, but it’s in the latter half that audiences will see a new side of her—even bordering on "villainous"—and "just thinking about this contrast was already so exciting to me."

"The Fourth Act", starring Stephen Fung, Angela Yuen, Myolie Wu, and Chrissie Chau, tells its story through the premise of a stage play, embedding clues between fact and fiction. Wong Tak Kin explained stage plays can be a carrier for presenting the intertwining of truth and lies, and that through the relationships among different characters, their pasts, personalities, and mindsets can be revealed.

Besides "The Fourth Act," this year's "Hong Kong Film Gala Presentation 2026-Kuala Lumpur Stop" also features "Mothers," "Waves of Life," "UFO Mystery Homicide," "The Birth of a Department," and the documentary "The Book of Traces: Rewriting the Self," totaling six distinctly themed and styled Hong Kong works, screening from the 21st to 30th at AURUM Theatre, along with the immersive exhibition "Hong Kong Cinema: Spectral Rhythm."

Elaine Jin said with a smile that she loves Malaysia and eating durian, and expressed gratitude to the Malaysian audience for their long-standing support of Hong Kong films. Amber Hui, who just attended the “MIFESST International Film Festival” in Malaysia last month, praised Malaysia as well-suited to film production, joking that filming here is "very cheap and the food is great," and said she might film here in the future—even teasing a durian-themed movie where everyone could eat durian as they shoot.

Adam Pak, who recently filmed the TV series "Crouching Dragon" in Malaysia, joked that he feels very "connected" with the country, and hopes this bond will continue so he can return for more shooting or promotional opportunities. Fish Liew urged Malaysian audiences to keep supporting Cantonese films, and besides her movie "Waves of Life" with Adam Pak, she also recommended "UFO Mystery Homicide" which she starred in, joking that audiences shouldn't overthink things: "Just enjoy these 90 minutes, that’s the most important thing."
