(Kuching, 8th) Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari outlined his vision for the state to develop its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, called "DeepSAR" (DeepSarawak), tailored to Sarawak's unique digital environment and resources.
Speaking at the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) 2025 Chinese New Year dinner last night, he shared his aspiration for a locally established AI system that can integrate and process Sarawak-specific data, fostering innovation and global connectivity.
"I hope we can have a DeepSAR created by Sarawakians – DeepSarawak, whose content is usually found in Sarawak, becoming another digital dialogue between Sarawakians and the world."
While he acknowledged that this remains an aspiration, he expressed confidence that with the right expertise and educational initiatives, DeepSAR could be realized in 2030, 2035, or 2040.
He emphasized that for such an AI model to thrive, Sarawak must first establish comprehensive connectivity throughout the state.
He also took this opportunity to commend Dr. Datuk Zhang Yongheng, the General Manager of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), for the efforts made in strengthening telecommunications and network infrastructure.
He highlighted global technological advancements, particularly in chip design and data transmission, which are crucial for Sarawak's economic progress.
He mentioned China's advancements in AI and semiconductor technologies, pointing out the rise of DeepSeek as a competitor to dominant companies like Nvidia and OpenAI.
"Data can only be transmitted through chips, which are like the blood in our body—they drive everything forward. That's why we focus on chip design to support our digital economy."
To achieve its digital ambitions, Sarawak is also positioning itself as a satellite launch center, leveraging its strategic location on the equator.
"Our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar has identified Sarawak as a satellite launch platform, where satellites can be deployed via rockets, airplanes, or floating ships—methods that are more environmentally friendly."
To realize this vision, Abang Johari stated that i-CATS University has been commissioned to collaborate with international satellite technology experts.
He also emphasized the increasing impact of AI across various industries, particularly healthcare, citing the development at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) teaching hospital, where AI-equipped medical devices can diagnose conditions and recommend treatments.
"These advances indicate that AI is reshaping various industries, from medicine to biodiversity conservation."
He added, noting that Sarawak is integrating its rich biodiversity data to monetize its ecological resources globally.
The Premier reiterated that his vision for DeepSAR aligns with Sarawak's broader digital transformation goals, further underscoring the need for localized AI solutions.
"Perhaps this won't happen in my generation, but if we lay the groundwork, someday it will become a reality."
