(Kuching, 8th) The Sarawak government will establish a comprehensive biodiversity database within Sarawak to strengthen the conservation and sustainable development of its biodiversity resources.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that this initiative will be implemented by Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), with the aim of collecting and coordinating all data related to biodiversity.
“I have asked Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr. George Chan to explore the possibility of integrating biodiversity data from all over the planet into a single database. This is because we are at the center of global biodiversity, especially in tropical rainforests. We will consolidate them using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Furthermore, we will also share our biodiversity resources economy with the world.”
Abang Johari made these remarks during his speech at the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) 2025 Lunar New Year celebration dinner last night.
The Premier added that the database will also serve as a valuable resource accessible to external parties, but not for free.
“Once downloaded, it is not free. This means that if billions of people worldwide want to use it, we also need to register patents and rights for our biodiversity resources.”
