(Kuching, Jan 2) Deputy Premier Sarawak Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian pointed out that the implementation of the body camera plan by the Kuching South City Council aligns with the Sarawak government's goals of promoting smart cities and digital management, further enhancing the credibility and integrity culture of law enforcement officers.

He emphasized that body cameras can not only help law enforcement officers respond to emergencies and provide timely support but also improve community relations and establish a positive image.

"I hope that the initiative by the Kuching South City Council will serve as a model to encourage other local councils to introduce similar devices and set up a one-stop command center."

During the ceremony for the introduction of body cameras on law enforcement officers hosted by the Kuching South City Council yesterday,  Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian highlighted that the Kuching South City Council is pioneering the use of technological means by implementing the plan for law enforcement officers to wear body cameras, thereby enhancing enforcement transparency and management efficiency, setting an example for smart city development.

He revealed that currently, some local councils in Sarawak such as Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, Lundu District Council, Sri Aman District Council, Lubok Antu District Council, and Sibu Rural District Council have not yet equipped themselves with body cameras.

Meanwhile, Kuching South City Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng mentioned that the council has been preparing for the command center project since last year. This center will not only integrate footage from body cameras used by law enforcement officers but also include real-time images from CCTV in the jurisdiction, providing strong support for comprehensive enhancement of regional management.

He disclosed that the Kuching South City Council has introduced 10 body cameras for law enforcement officers to use, aiming to provide clear records for enforcement actions, strengthen transparency and accountability, and gain public trust in municipal enforcement work.

He said this measure not only protects law enforcement officers from false accusations but also helps improve enforcement procedures, reduce disputes, and simplify case handling processes through video evidence.
