Lee Tian Song: Integrating 3R Environmental Protection into Cultural Festivals Advancing Miri onto the International Stage

(Miri, 12th) Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0 chairman Lee Tian Song stated that “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” (3R) is not only an environmental concept, but should also be promoted through cultural activities, encouraging the public—especially the younger generation—to participate and build a greener future together.

He said that the Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0 has entered its 11th day. On that night, aside from celebrating multiculturalism, a special 3R eco-friendly fashion design and fashion show competition was held to raise society’s attention toward environmental protection.

“This is a meaningful event. We are not only celebrating cultural diversity but also promoting environmental awareness.”

He pointed out that this year’s competition had 58 students from 21 schools participating, and all costumes were made using recyclable and reusable materials, demonstrating the fusion of creativity and environmental consciousness.

He said that the competition values not only design creativity but also emphasizes environmental protection and resource reuse, illustrating through practice that waste can be transformed into meaningful works.

Lee Tian Song made these remarks while addressing the Second Miri District Primary School 3R Eco-Friendly Fashion Design and Fashion Show Competition at Borneo Cultural Carnival 4.0 last night.

He emphasized that the event aligns with the Sarawak Government’s vision to promote green energy and environmental protection, and is dedicated to building a more sustainable future for the next generation.

He reviewed the development of the carnival and noted that since its founding in 2017, it has continued to grow: The event started with only 17 ethnic groups participating and set the record for “most traditional dances in a single event.” By 2024, it expanded to 20 ethnic groups, attracting delegations from Sabah and Indonesia and setting two entries in the “Malaysia Book of Records.”

He said that by 2026, the carnival will further move toward internationalization, involving 24 ethnic groups and attracting delegations from China, Brunei, Indonesia, Sabah, and Sarawak, successfully building a cultural exchange platform.

He added that the carnival recently set a new record for “most ethnic associations participating in a parade,” with a total of 39 ethnic groups taking part in a grand street procession, demonstrating the charm of cultural diversity.

He stated that in the future, this platform will continue to expand, aiming to create a larger, more impactful cultural event by 2028.

He also thanked the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Miri MP Yii Xiao Shan, guests, sponsors, and all participating parties for their support, which contributed to the smooth running of the event.

He called upon society to pay attention to environmental protection while celebrating multiculturalism, and to work together for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
