Chiew Choon Man: Rooting the 3R Concept in Education Creativity Powers Miri’s Sustainable Development

(Miri, 12th) Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture and Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man stated that “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” (3R) is not just an environmental protection concept but also an essential value for moving toward a sustainable future, and should be cultivated from a young age and practiced in daily life.
He said that through the “3R Eco-Friendly Fashion Design and Runway Competition,” students showcased their ability to transform discarded materials into creative works, demonstrating the unlimited possibilities when combining environmental protection and art, and also reflecting the younger generation’s attention to and sense of responsibility for environmental issues.

“Today, we are not only celebrating a fashion competition but also witnessing a meaningful creative practice.”
He expressed this in his speech at the second Miri District Primary School 3R Eco-Friendly Fashion Design and Runway Competition, part of the Borneo Culture Carnival 4.0, last night.
Due to official duties, Chiew Choon Man was unable to attend in person and specially appointed his representative, Zou Zijian, to attend and deliver the speech on his behalf.

He pointed out that in the face of current social challenges such as pollution, excess waste, and climate change, joint efforts from all sectors are a must, and education plays a key role in fostering environmental awareness.
He said that seeing students creatively using recyclable materials to design clothing is inspiring, and this also proves that every small action can contribute to protecting the environment.
Chiew Choon Man also emphasized that sustainable environmental development is closely related to the tourism industry, as more and more tourists are inclined to choose clean, green, and responsible travel destinations.
Miri is blessed with abundant natural resources, including coastlines, national parks, and diverse biological ecology, and must be safeguarded by everyone.
He praised the Borneo Culture Carnival organizers and participating schools for successfully holding this event, integrating environmental education, creativity, and community participation to nurture a generation with greater environmental awareness. He also hopes that all sectors will continue to work together to build a better Miri and Sarawak together.
