Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook pointed out that the Director of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Aidie Fadly, proactively suggested that the department's enforcement officers wear body cameras to maintain the department's integrity and image.
He made this statement at a press conference after delivering the department's New Year message today, saying: "It was not I who forced the Road Transport Department to wear them; it was the Director of the Road Transport Department who proactively suggested last week, during a dialogue with me and the department, to immediately obtain funding for the purchase of these body cameras."
Loke Siew Fook said that the Road Transport Department believes that this equipment not only can maintain the department's image but also plays a protective role for enforcement officers.
"Sometimes our enforcement officers face various accusations and slanders, and with body cameras, the enforcement officers of the Road Transport Department can be safeguarded, capturing all kinds of evidence during enforcement."
He said he has already requested the department's management to discuss with the Ministry of Finance to apply for funding for the purchase of body cameras.
"I hope the Road Transport Department enforcement officers will receive body cameras this year."
