Riots in Makassar, Indonesia: Local Parliament Building Set on Fire, 3 Dead and 5 Injured

On Friday night (August 29), a large-scale riot broke out in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. The local parliament building was set on fire by demonstrators, resulting in at least 3 deaths including one official, and 5 others injured.

The incident occurred at 10:45 p.m. local time (29th), when Makassar City Council (DPRD) was holding a plenary session. The mayor, Munafri, and several council members were present. However, before the fire spread, all meeting participants successfully evacuated and no one was trapped.

Authorities pointed out that among the 5 injured, some were forced to jump from high floors of the building to escape and were taken to various hospitals in Makassar for treatment.

The police and fire department have launched an investigation, but the identity of the arsonist and the motive have not yet been disclosed.
