Global semiconductor foundry leader TSMC (TSMC) has announced that it will establish a chip design center in Munich, Germany, which is expected to leverage advanced process technology to drive chip development in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI).
This announcement represents a major victory for the European Union, as Brussels has been striving to strengthen Europe's autonomy in the semiconductor manufacturing sector.
According to reports from Taiwan's Economic Daily and Liberty Times, TSMC's Europe Regional President, Dertbot, announced at the 2025 Technology Symposium on the 27th that the chip design center in Munich is expected to be operational in the third quarter of this year.
Dertbot pointed out that this design center will assist European customers in developing high-density, high-performance, and energy-efficient chips, with a focus on applications in the automotive, industrial, AI, and IoT fields.
A TSMC spokesperson revealed that the choice of Munich is due to its geographical proximity to numerous European customers. Once operational, this new center will become part of TSMC's global design center network, which currently includes centers in Taiwan, China, Japan, Canada, and the United States, totaling nine centers.
Since US President Trump took office, Europe has been intensifying its efforts in the AI field to narrow the gap with the US and China and achieve a higher degree of autonomy.
